Electrolysis of vanadyl sulfate electrolytes containing 10-20 g l(-1) sodiu
m ions yields deposits that convert to monoclinic bronze beta-Na0.33V2O5 af
ter a high-temperature treatment. The bronze composition and properties are
studied by X-ray diffractometry, thermal analysis, absorption IR spectrosc
opy, and electrochemical methods. It has a high specific discharge capacity
and can be effectively cycled in an electrolyte containing propylene carbo
nate, dimethoxyethane, and 1 M LiClO4.
