Abstract
The melting of elemental solids is modeled as a dislocation-mediated transi tion on a lattice. Statistical mechanics of linear defects is used to obtai n a new relation between melting temperature, crystal structure, atomic vol ume, and sheer modulus that is accurate to 17% for at least half of the Per iodic Table.
