Jm. Xue et al., Study of the penetration behavior of energetic ions in botanic materials with transmission measurement, SURF COAT, 128, 2000, pp. 139-143
The penetration behavior of MeV F ions in botanic materials (onion inner su
rface membrane and kidney bean coat) was studied with a transmission measur
ement method. The dose rate of the ion beam was about approximately 10(4) i
ons/cm(2) s and 10(12) ions/cm(2) s respectively. A silicon barrier detecto
r that was placed behind the sample recorded the possibly penetrated ions.
The irradiation damage of the samples was observed with scanning electronic
microscopy (SEM) after the irradiation experiment. Experimental results sh
ow that a small amount of F ions could penetrate the samples whose average
mass thickness is much larger than ion's theoretical range calculated with
the TRIM code; the ion transmission ratio increases with the irradiation ti
me when the beam current density is high enough. The special penetration be
havior of ions in botanic samples and the mechanisms are discussed in this
paper. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
