New chiral sulfoxide ligands possessing a phosphano or phosphanoamino funct
ionality as an alternative coordinating element were developed, and their u
sefulness was demonstrated by applying them to palladium-catalyzed asymmetr
ic allylic nucleophilic substitution reactions. The structure of the cataly
st precursor coordinated by the chiral phosphino sulfoxide was determined b
y X-ray crystallographic analysis. The possible mechanism for the asymmetri
c induction using these chiral ligands was proposed on the basis of the ste
reochemical outcome obtained. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights res
