Ectopic thyroid is rare and occasionally presents suddenly in childhood. Ad
ult patients with thyroid ectopy who develop local symptoms commonly have a
n enlarged ectopic gland and hypothyroidism. We describe the first case of
an adult patient who sudden presented with sudden dysphagia and dyspnea cau
sed by a large lingual thyroid in clinical and biochemical euthyroidism. Tr
eatment consisted of surgical removal of the ectopic gland and thyroid horm
one replacement therapy.
