A new bonded liquid-crystal stationary phase for highperformance liquid chr
omatography is presented. Synthesis entailed reaction of gamma-benzyl-L-glu
tamate-N-carboxyanhydride with aminopropyl LiChrospher 100 NH2. The new sta
tionary phase was characterized by solid-state C-13 NMR and elemental analy
sis. Its analytical properties were tested with polynuclear aromatic hydroc
arbons (PAH) and phenols. PAH were chromatographed with hexane-chloroform m
ixtures as mobile phases and were eluted in order of increasing ring number
. Total resolution of the 22 PAH studied was achieved by gradient elution.
Phenols were chromatographed with a mixture of chloroform and methanol as m
obile phase. Small amounts of methanol have a substantial effect on the sep
aration of the phenols. Use of 0.5% (nu/nu) methanol enabled the separation
of 19 phenols and phenol derivatives.
