High magnetic field effects on the magnetic exciton in EuTe were inves
tigated with a Faraday rotation measurement to compare with the usual
magnetization measurement. Thin films of EuTe which were epitaxially g
rown with the hot wall method were used in the experiments. The field
dependence of the Faraday rotation for non-resonant light is in good a
greement with the normalized magnetization curve. The field dependence
for resonant light with the transition (4f)7-(4f)6(5d) is not consist
ent with the magnetization curve. The inconsistency is considered to b
e due to the non-linear dependence of the rotation angle for resonant
light. The temperature characteristics show an increase of the high fi
eld Faraday rotation in liquid He temperature corresponding to the sho
rt-range order like magnetic polarization around the optically excited
Eu2+ ions.
