The effect of exopolysaccharides (EPS) on the response of exponential
and stationary cells of an Acinetobacter sp, to different unfavorable
ambient factors was studied. EPS synthesized by Acinetobacter sp. unde
r optimum growth conditions were found to protect the bacterium from e
xtreme pH values, elevated temperature, drying, freezing, biocides, an
d detergents. Exponential cells showed a higher tolerance to some of t
he effecters studied. The relationship between the physiological state
of Acinetobacter sp. cells and the protective abilities of EPS is dis
cussed.
