Exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by an Acinetobacter sp, were found t
o be capable of protecting its cells against heavy metal ions (Cu2+, P
b2+, and Cr3+). In the presence of EPS, exponential cells were more me
tal-resistant than stationary cells. EPS were not protective with resp
ect to Cd2+ and Cr6+. In addition to EPS production, Acinetobacter sp.
probably has other protective mechanisms.
