The project for constructing a 20 T hybrid magnet system at the Instit
ute of Plasma Physics, Academia Sinica, was started in 1984 and the hy
brid magnet consisting of a NbTi superconducting coil and a water-cool
ed Bitter coil with 32 mm working bore was first tested in May 1992 pr
oducing a steady field of 20.2 T. This installation is now available f
or scientific experiments. The laboratory also provides water-cooled m
agnets with fields up to 14 T at two magnet sites and a NbTi supercond
ucting magnet capable of producing 7.5 T in a 10 cm bore for the users
. Studies on high T(c) superconductors, magnetic materials, low-dimens
ional organic conductors, etc., have been conducted in high fields. In
the paper the laboratory facilities together with some results of res
earch obtained are reported.
