The visual performance tester (VPT), a device that uses patient response ti
me as a variable to assess visual power, is described. Results in 126 emmet
ropic eyes that had not had surgery are presented. The VPT provides more co
mplete and accurate information about visual performance than the standard
visual acuity examination because the device considers all variables involv
ed in visual function results. (C) 2000 ASCRS and ESCRS.
