G. Machel et al., DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF PULSED-FIELD MAGNETS WITH AN OPTIMIZED ICE FIBER REINFORCEMENT, Physica. B, Condensed matter, 201, 1994, pp. 575-578
We present the design of a new magnet for the generation of non-destru
ctive pulsed magnetic fields in the 50 T range. Basically, the new mag
net combines the advantages of recently developed ice coils with optim
ized fibre reinforced pulsed magnets. It consists of a stainless steel
cylinder in which the coil is placed separately. The cylinder can be
filled with water which leads to a strong reinforcement at 77 K. Sever
al magnets of this type have been made and were tested. Furthermore, w
e have tested the use of SiC-powder in combination with water. The inf
luence of the resulting ceramics-like material on reinforcement and th
ermal behaviour (cooling rate) is discussed.
