Currently there are no official methods to allow measurement of the surface
friction of leather. The parameter of surface friction will have an import
ant influence on the aesthetic evaluation of leather, and so research was u
ndertaken to quantify this parameter. Work has been undertaken to investiga
te the parameters which influence the measurement of surface friction. A me
thod was developed which used the technique whereby a materials tester is u
sed to pull a sled (around which was fixed the leather) across a reference
material. Various parameters that could influence the test method were inve
stigated and as a result, optimisation of the testing procedure was possibl
