Pyrolysis of (N-alpha-isopropoxyethyl)isobutyramide, which was obtaine
d by the reaction of isobutyramide, 2-propanol, and acetaldehyde in th
e presence of cone. sulfuric acid, produced N-vinylisobutyramide (NVIB
A). The free radical polymerization of NVIBA was carried out in variou
s solvents in the presence of a radical initiator. It was found that t
he polymerizability of NVIBA is similar to that of N-vinylacetamide. T
he resulting polyNVIBA showed a lower critical solution temperature (L
CST) sharply at 39 degrees. Thermosensitive properties of polyNVIBA we
re investigated in comparison with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). (C) 19
