A new technique has been developed for the determination of heavy-ion stopp
ing powers by combining the Doppler shift attenuation (DSA) and transmissio
n methods. This technique offers a possibility to measure stopping powers o
f bulk materials for heavy ions over a wide velocity range. The validity of
the new method was demonstrated by measuring the stopping powers of SiO2,
Si, ZrO2, Zr, Al2O3 and Al for Si-29 ions at velocities 1.0-5.0v(0). Consid
erable deviations from Bragg rule were observed in the calculated contribut
ions of the oxygen stopping powers for different oxides. (C) 2000 Elsevier
