Abstract
The doubly magic nuclei Ca-40 and Ca-48 have been studied in high resolutio n photon scattering experiments. We have derived absolute dipole and quadru pole excitation strengths up to 10 MeV. Evidence was found for a two-phonon quadrupole-octupole state in Ca-48. At higher energies in contl ast to Ca- 40, a concentration of dipole strength is observed in Ca-48 which is discus sed in terms of a pygmy resonance originating fi om the large neutron exces s.
