The conversion efficiency of scintillators with several types of electronic
excitations is considered. The types and distribution of electronic excita
tions created in CeF3 by the absorption of a high energy photon are reviewe
d, the effect of the self-trapping processes on the energy transfer efficie
ncy from the excitations in the fluorine subsystem is discussed, limitation
s imposed on the scintillation yield by the coexistence of two types of exc
itations are demonstrated. Comparison with the fluorescence excitation of L
axCe1-xF3 and LuF3-Ce is made.
