The optical properties of nominally pure CaF2 crystals as well as those of
pure and Li+ and Na+-doped CaF2 powders are compared. The emission band pea
king at 3.85 eV and the excitation band in the region of 10-10.6 eV, observ
ed in CaF2 : Li and CaF2 : Na powders, are ascribed to the radiative decay
of a self-trapped exciton perturbed by an anion vacancy.
