Temporal code and speech recognition

The hypothesis that temporal code is mainly responsible for speech recognit ion is discussed. Data from cochlear implant research demonstrate that sing le-channel speech processors, supplying only temporal code. enable understa nding of spoken language. Physiological findings supporting the observation are presented. A temporal theory of tone pitch perception is discussed.
