This paper examines the relation between easterly waves that propagate from
over the Caribbean Sea toward the East Pacific Ocean and deep convective b
ursts that frequently occur over the Gulf of Tehuantepec and often intensif
y into tropical cyclones. This study shows that there are disturbances pres
ent over the Caribbean at the time the convection is developing over the Gu
lf and that the disturbances have a horizontal and vertical structure and p
ropagation features characteristic of easterly waves.
