Estradiol, administered at a dose of 10 mu g/100g body weight caused a stat
istically significant increase in renal diamine oxidase (DAO) activity in t
he male, but not in the female immature mouse kidney. In female mice, testo
sterone at doses of 1 mu g, 10 mu g and 100 mu g/100g body weight provoked
a significant elevation in renal DAO activity, whereas in males the hormona
l effects were weaker and dose-dependent. Our data indicate 1) the estrogen
ic control of renal DAO in male mice and 2) the sex- and dose-dependent ind
ucibility of the enzyme by testosterone. Taken together these observations
suggest the possibility of an involvement of DAO in regulation of putrescin
e pool in the mouse kidney by sex steroids.
