Travel-related illness is a burden for primary care, with more than two mil
lion travellers consulting a general practitioner each year. The annual cos
t of travel-related illness in the United Kingdom is pound 11 million. Trav
el agents are in a unique position to influence this burden as the most com
mon and most serious problems are preventable with simple advice and/or imm
unisation. This study, using covert researchers, suggests this potential is
not being fully utilised.
