Even in today's progressive swine industry, bacterial respiratory pathogens
continue to cause problems. These problems have been exacerbated because o
f the development of multiple-site production systems. Three bacterial agen
ts, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma hyopne
umoniae, are discussed in this article, which reviews clinical signs, lesio
ns, and treatment/prevention programs for each organism. Also discussed are
descriptions of bordetellosis, atrophic rhinitis, and pneumonic pasteurell
osis in suckling piglets.
