Abstract
We use ideas from cyclic homology [3] and K-theory to define a kind of "Che m character" for the ideal class group of a number field. In the quadratic case, this character gives nontrivial elements of the class group. In the c yclotomic case, this character is related to the Kummer logarithmic derivat ives.
