Axial patterning in leaves and other lateral organs

The establishment of abaxial-adaxial polarity in lateral organs involves fa ctors intrinsic to the primordia and interactions with the apical meristem from which they are derived. Recent molecular genetic studies have identifi ed some of the genes that promote either adaxial or abaxial cell fates, wit h many of the genes encoding spatially localized transcription factors.
