Improving the design and application of local extract systems (LES) require
s the analysis of the interactions between the captured air volume flow, th
e spread of pollutants and the disturbing air movements, e. g. crossflow, i
n a controlled environment. These interactions were investigated in a resea
rch project for the case of thermal airflow together with crossflow. The pr
oject was based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations and exte
nsive experimental investigations in a test rig for collecting devices. Imp
roved LES design methods developed for easy use are published in a national
Design Guide Book (in German) of the German Federal Institute for Occupati
onal Safety and Health (FIOSH).
