Abstract
The ground state of C-60(-) gives rise to a T(1u)X8 h(g) Jahn-Teller ( JT) system. A proof is presented showing that the presence of eight ac tive h, modes rather than one makes little difference to the mathemati cal complexity of this problem compared to the simpler single-mode var iant. After showing that the T(1u)X8 h(g) Jahn-Teller system has the s ame electronic eigenstates as the T(1u)Xh(g) Jahn-Teller system, the i nversion splitting and first-order reduction factors are derived.
