Radiation heat transfer is a primary reason for fire growth. Experimental d
ata are needed to clarify the ignition potential and time required to ignit
e a particular target second item. The concepts of critical heat flux and t
hermal response parameter are important to the material ignition problem. T
he objective of the present contribution is to clarify these important radi
ant ignition concepts and to exemplify a range of realistic calculations re
lated to real-world situations.
