Up until the present time, there has been little research devoted to applyi
ng a time-dependent parabolic model to describe wave breaking and wide-angl
e wave incidence. The purpose of this paper is to extend the applicability
range of the time-dependent parabolic equation model for both improving the
radiation boundary conditions, and including an energy dissipation term in
the mild-slope equation. The wave breaking and energy dissipation model wa
s examined using experimental data. The comparison indicates that the propo
sed model can adequately predict the behavior of wave breaking and energy d
issipation in the surf zone. The computational results also show that the p
roposed model may improve the conventional treatment of the radiation bound
ary conditions for wide-angle wave incidence.
