Scapegoats: The killing of kings and ordinary people

This article uses the example of royal ritual to examine the idea that unde rlying structures can be abstracted from particular cultural settings. It i s argued that African material on kingship and scapegoats can be used to el ucidate South Asian material on pollution beliefs and caste.
