Abstract
Glutamine plays an important role in normal and pathophysiological sta tes. In this review we describe the biochemical synthesis and degradat ion pathways of glutamine, as well as its utilization by the immune sy stem and in rapidly dividing cells. Also discussed are glutamine behav iour in catabolic states and the therapeutic implications of this amin o acid in total parenteral nutrition, digestive diseases and cancer.
