A new route has been investigated for the production of the Rb-81(Kr-81m) g
enerator parent radionuclide at low energy cyclotrons. The excitation funct
ion of the Kr-80(d,n)Rb-81 reaction was measured up to 14 MeV using natural
Kr gas as target, the activation method and a stacked gas-cell irradiation
technique. The saturation yield of Rb-81 over the energy range E-d = 14 --
> 6 MeV amounts to 2.86 GBq/mu A. A comparison of this production method wi
th the commonly used Kr-82(p,2n)Rb-81 route is given.
