Background/aims: The purpose was to establish equilibrium and stoichio
metric relations associated with production of manganese ferroalloys,
and to determine experimentally equilibrium distribution between multi
component slags and Mn-Fe-Si-C-sat alloys. Methods: Measurements were
carried out in a resistance furnace in an argon and carbon monoxide at
mosphere in the temperature range 1350 degrees C to 1500 degrees C. Gr
aphite crucibles were used. Only a small amount of slag was charged to
expose both metal and slag to the gas phase. In this way, complete eq
uilibrium was established relatively fast. Metal samples were analyzed
by wet chemical methods and slag samples by electron microprobe analy
sis. Results and conclusions: A thermodynamic analysis has been made a
nd a graphical method is developed for simultaneous description of equ
ilibrium and stoichiometric relations in slag diagrams. The results of
equilibrium measurements are compared with previous results, and the
effect of adding MgO to the slag and Fe to the metal is especially dis
cussed.
