Abstract
The paper focuses on the stoic doctrine of knowing, highlighting the nature of the stoic phantasy, which had been understood as an impression and late r as a change of the tension of the main part of the soul (hegemonika). The stoic phantasies are divided according to their origin and epistemological meaning into sense and non-sense ones and into cataleptical and non-catale ptical ones. In stoic epistemology a clear definition of a cataleptic phant asy is very important, because for the Stoics it embodies a mean for graspi ng the lecta, it is therefore the criterion of true knowledge.
