Focusing transformations of multioffset data is a powerful tool to study co
mplex media like trappean intrusions in the upper crust, low-velocity zones
, finely laminated sections, etc. A practical problem in this respect is to
adjust observation systems to specific conditions of the study region maki
ng the right choice of the number of sources and geophones, distances betwe
en offset midpoints, degree of a symmetry, and other parameters.
We propose to do this choice on the basis of synthetic data gained by finit
e difference simulation of wave propagation within the limits of a realisti
c model of the medium. A necessary condition to make the method efficient i
s to take into account all factors that control wave propagation in a certa
in study region.
