In this paper it is shown that the Mayr-type are models can be used to desc
ribe the are behavior before current zero exactly. Based on this analysis t
he different types of 'modified' Mayr are models can be explained. As a res
ult of the theory, an improved Mayr-type are model - with a constant time p
arameter and a cooling power which is dependent on the electrical power inp
ut - is introduced and used to reproduce current zero measurements successf
ully.
