The transmittance for a two-dimensional photonic-crystal structure consisti
ng of 8 x 8 cylinders filled with or surrounded by a liquid crystal was num
erically calculated using the scattering matrix method. When the refractive
index of the liquid crystal was increased from 1.4 to 1.6, the transmittan
ce for the liquid-crystal-filled cylinders increased from 4.5 x 10(-3) to 1
at a wavelength of 825 nm, and that for the cylinders surrounded by the li
quid crystal increased from 1.3 x 10(-3) to 1 at 1060 nm (triangular lattic
e) and from 3.0 x 10(-4) to 1 at 1140 nm (square lattice).
