The object of the present work is to evaluate the use of toluene as an alte
rnative solvent for nicotine extraction from aqueous-leached solutions of t
obacco wastes. The liquid-liquid equilibrium data of the ternary system wat
er + toluene + nicotine has been determined at 295, 303, and 313 K. The res
ults have been correlated using the UNIQUAC and NRTL equations with linear
temperature-dependent parameters. It is concluded that toluene is an effect
ive agent for nicotine extraction.
