Atomic force microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and measurements o
f intrinsic permeability are used to characterize ceramic membranes made us
ing a newly developed alumoxane-based method conceived as an environmentall
y benign process. AFM, BET and permeability data indicate that the alumoxan
e synthesis pathway can be used to readily produce unsupported membranes wi
th pore sizes in the range of 10-20 nm and with permeabilities comparable t
o those of anodized alumina membranes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All r
