A cylindrical microwave resonant cavity operating in the TE011 mode was use
d to study the dielectric response of SrTiO3 and YiBa(2)CU(3)O(x). The micr
owave dielectric response of the powdered samples of these materials is stu
died as a function of temperature at a frequency of 10.6 GHz. For this stud
y, a very precise heating and cooling system was designed to control the te
mperature accurately to a tenth of a degree. The real and imaginary parts o
f the complex: permittivity were studied using Slater's Perturbation equati
ons. The relaxation times of these materials are derived using Debye's equa
tions for polar molecules.
