Abstract
A thin layer chromatographic method is described for detection of the bitte rant denatonium saccharide (Amerex) in denatured spirit. On chlorination an d treatment with o-tolidine the bitterant yields an intense blue spot. Othe r denaturants such as pyridine bases and caoutchoucine generally present in denatured spirit do not give a positive reaction with this reagent and hen ce do not interfere with the test. The detection limit for denatonium sacch aride is 0.2 mu g (10 mu g mL(-1)) per spot.
