We develop hard-wired simulations of temporal sequence storage and generati
on by multi-modular networks based on the frontal lobe system (cortex, basa
l ganglia and thalamus). Single cell activity is shown to have been constru
cted so as to mimic results measured in monkeys on a similar task, indicati
ng that a suitable form of chunking had been achieved in the models. The ma
thematical nature of these processes is discussed, from the viewpoint of bi
