The cognitive effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are of particular conce
rn to clinicians because these drugs are the primary therapeutic modality f
or managing epilepsy. In general, the cognitive effects of most AEDs are mo
dest and offset by their benefit in reducing seizures. Nonetheless, the cog
nitive effects of a particular AED may be clinically significant when treat
ing specific patient populations, such as children and the elderly.
