, and Sarmatian army receive such attention from Tacitus (Annals 6.34-35)?
This article examines how Tacitus embellishes the battle, not only in order
to enhance its aesthetic appeal, but also to signpost it as a compelling h

tely sours the entertainment provided by the battle. In accordance with the
notion of metus hostilis, the absence of a formidable enemy abroad unleash
es self-destructive behaviour in Rome.
