Ac. Moller et al., Further studies of the effect of magnetic fields on the oscillating peroxidase-oxidase reaction, PHYS CHEM P, 2(15), 2000, pp. 3443-3446
We have performed an experimental study of the effect of DC magnetic fields
on the oscillating peroxidase-oxidase reaction to obtain additional inform
ation about the mechanism of the action of the magnetic field. The changes
in oscillation amplitude and frequency were measured at low (5.1) and high
(6.3) pH, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of a magnetic field with a
field strength of 1000 G on the oscillation amplitude was measured at diffe
rent concentrations of enzyme and the modifiers methylene blue and 4-hydrox
ybenzoic acid. Changes in pH and the concentration of methylene blue seemed
to have little or no effect on the reaction's magnetosensitivity. However,
increases in the enzyme concentration or the concentration of 4-hydroxyben
zoic acid were accompanied by increases in magnetosensitivity. These result
s lend support to a previously proposed mechanism in which the magnetosensi
tive steps involve the transfer of electrons to two enzyme intermediates, c
ompounds I and II.
