The hyperfine structure and isotope shifts of the transition between t
he 5d6s(2) a(2)D(3/2) ground state and the 5d6s(a(3)D)6p z(4)F(5/2)deg
rees excited state of singly ionized hafnium at lambda = 340 nm have b
een investigated by laser spectroscopy using a radio-frequency quadrup
ole ion trap. The magnetic dipole coupling constant A and electric qua
drupole coupling constant B of the two atomic levels for both stable i
sotopes Hf-177 and Hf-179 are determined. The changes of mean square n
uclear charge radii delta[r(2)] of the stable Hf isotopes and the radi
oactive isotope Hf-172 (T-1/2 = 1.87a) have been extracted from the da
ta.
