A person with one eye missing, due to various causes, may suffer psychologi
cally as well as physically. The lost eye can be mechanically replaced by a
n ocular implant. Significant advances have been made in this area. An ocul
ar prosthesis was created to replace the lost eye. The prosthesis appears n
atural physically. However, the eye is static or has small movement ability
. The purpose of this paper is to develop an autonomous ocular motor system
, so the artificial eye can have more natural movement. Detection of moveme
nt of the natural eye is an important issue. A review of eye movement detec
tion methods is included in this paper. Then fusion method is designed for
eye movement detection. First the eye movement is recorded and stored as se
nsed data space. Then during the experiment, the eye movement signal is obt
ained through the sensor array and through the matching rule, the eye posit
ion is obtained. The main part of this paper deals with the experimental sy
stem, fusion technologies, and preliminary results. (C) 2000 Elsevier Scien
