Abstract
1. The following are critical control areas to be addressed in order to pre vent periparturient disease: Maximize dry matter intake Maintain energy and protein intake Prepare rumen for feed changes Maintain calcium homeostasis Minimize immune dysfunction 2. The following are important management practices that address critical c ontrol areas to prevent periparturient disease: Separate feeding groups for far off and close-up dry cows, and fresh cows t o address specific nutrient needs. Feed a balanced diet for the observed level of intake for the farm. Minimize environmental stressors during transition. Monitor forage quality and nutrient content of feed ingredients. Manage body condition score of dry cows to be within 3.25 to 3.75 Maintain monitoring program to assess potential for problems.
