Abstract
Under processing barley reduces digestibility, feed intake and milk product ion Over processing barley reduces milk production by reducing feed intake. Processing Index (PI) is a practical means for measuring degree of processi ng in steam processed barley with the optimal being about PI 64 to 68%. PI should prove a useful method for measuring degree of processing of rolle d HMB and rolled tempered barley (corrected for moisture). Optimal PI is li kely close to that of steam processed barley, however this needs to be conf irmed with research. A reliable and practical method for measuring the degree of processing of d ry rolled and ground barley needs to be developed to make objective compari sons between the different methods of processing feasible.
