Abstract
The determination of the order of genes along cereal chromosomes indicates that the cereals can be described as a single genetic system. Such a framew ork provides an opportunity to combine data generated from the studies on d ifferent cereals, enables chromosome evolution to be traced, and sheds ligh t on key structures involved in cereal chromosome pairing. Centromeric and telomeric regions have been highlighted as important in these processes.
